BC Trip Part Five

We left Port Alberni in the late morning and mosied on down to Victoria. We stopped in a little town call Chemanius which is famous for its murals. We spent an hour or two walking around looking at all the murals. We ate lunch in the car and kept driving. On the way to Chemanius we passed a little place which is famous for its "Goats on the Roof" Yes, that's right, they have goats on their roof. We didn't walk around, but stopped long enough to get a few pictures.

Happy Birthday Sweetheart!

Every time I think of you, I smile

I think of your sweet, kind face

I think of your eyes

So full of love and adoration

I think of your strong hands holding mine

I think of your gentle voice

Speaking words of love and devotion

I think of being held in yours arms

Your cheek resting against mine

I think of your smile

The way your eyes light up when you laugh

I think of your gaze, your scent, your touch

I think of the last time your lips touched mine

And even though you’re miles away

I can still taste your kiss

I can still feel your love

Every time I think of you.

Since writing this post, Katie has been doing much, much better! Thanks for all your helpful comments, Ladies. My  mom had one comment I thought was really helpful. She said, if your baby will only eat six bites, make sure those six bites are packed full of nutrients. No arrowroot cookie, some yogurt or cheese or something with protein. We did that one day. She hardly ate anything!  After a few days of not those eating habits, I think she clued in, and not long after, she ate and ate and ate! Now she's back to her normal appetite.

We basically just buckled down and got through it! Thankfully "it" was short-lived! A slap on the hand and giving her the "you will not win" tone of voice I think really helped. I find it much more effective if she has to look in my eyes(for any discipline). It's so funny(and difficult not to laugh) when I grab her chin to make her look in my eyes. She'll look everywhere else but my eyes and try to distract me by pointing to something and saying in her baby language "look mom, see that? Neat huh?" What a goof!  In the last three or four days, I've only had to speak sternly to her a few times and she knows I mean business!

I'm sure we haven't seen the last of this, but I think keeping a tight rein on her will really help down the road.

I noticed that many of my blog posts as of late, have been devoid of pictures. Allow me to make up for that oversight :-)

Yes, I realize they're all pictures of Katie... there isn't much here of interest right now!

Ok, so you all know my daughter is perfect... ahhahaa!! Did you laugh? Good. Ok, so she's not perfect, but close to it... ahhaaa!! Laughed again didn't you?!

Alright, anyways, Katie is a very good-natured, generally well-behaved kid. Smiley, happy, good eater, good sleeper.... hold the phone! Make that, WAS a good eater. I know, I bragged, now it's coming back to bite me in the butt!

Katie has in the last couple weeks:

  1. Discovered how to stick out her tongue

  2. Turned One

  3. Become much more distracted while eating

  4. Lost most of her appetite

  5. Discovered how to stick out her tongue with all her food on it

From what I hear, it's all pretty common, that however, doesn't make up for the irritability of it all. Obviously she won't starve(she has lots of fat reserves), so I'm not worried about that. It's the attitude that comes with it that we'd like to keep in check!

Distraction works some of the time, rewards(ie cheerio after a bite of supper) sometimes work, but nothing consistently. The question is, how big of a deal do we make it?

Any suggestions from you Moms out there?

I can't remember

I can't remember
what it feels like to have the warm sunshine on my face,
to feel the kiss of Spring as the wind gently blows
I can't remember
how the buds look upon the trees
the apple blossom trees that sway in the breeze
I can't remember
how the tender shoots of grass poke through the cold dark earth
what it feels like to walk barefoot on the grass
I can't remember
the vibrant colours that fill the landscape
the aroma that fills the air
Winter has been long, but Spring will come again
and then
I will remember

Advice Needed

I'm on a painting kick, as in I've jumped on the band wagon and I'm not getting off! But there isn't a top-10-FAQ sheet on this wagon so....

My question for all you DIYs.. what kind of paint do you use to paint furniture? Just your regular wall paint? Melamine paint?

I've used regular wall paint on a few things that don't see much use, but what about for a coffee or end table?

If you have just used regular wall paint, how does it hold up? Obviously nothing is able to withstand the destruction of kids banging their wooden blocks on it, but how would you rate it?

  1. Great

  2. Good

  3. Not bad

  4. Will do in a pinch

  5. Not worth the effort

A Special Visit from a Special Aunt

My tante Miriam flew out from Alberta last week for my Opa's 80th birthday and stayed a night at our house. It was so special to see Katie connect with her Great Amazing Aunt. Here are a few pictures.

A couple weeks I taught Katie how to say "please" in baby sign language. It only took a few times of showing her at lunch for her to catch on and we've been doing it ever since. Not ever single instance, mind you, but throughout the day and especially mealtime to try to switch the whole "if-I-whine-loud-enough-I'll-get-what-I-want ." Most of the time we have to prompt her with a "what do you say?", but occasionally she does it by herself. So cool to see the wheels turn.

Just this morning at breakfast, she signed please and then pointed to the bowl of fruit! She already had her banana so she wasn't getting another one, but I was so proud!! Then again when I changd her diaper, she was reaching for a facecloth but could quite get it. She looked at me and back at the facecloth and signed please!

Please is the only thing I've taught her so far. I'm not planning on her the whole sign alphabet, but maybe a few more key words like, More, Thank you, All done etc.

Just incase you have doubts about my talented daughter, I've uploaded this video as proof :-) :-)

Nothing much

I've been sorely lacking on my posts lately. I've been lacking inspiration, and I've just been busy other things.  But, now that I think of of it, I can't really think of what I've been so busy with!

I spring cleaned my Living Room two weeks ago and my upstairs bathroom is on my list for tomorrow! It's March so now I have to do a room each week!

I've had a good week so far though. Monday I made four loaves of bread, nine jars of jam, two loads of laundry, did three big loads of dishes, took Katie for her 1year pics, and made muffins.  I felt very, very productive that day!

Tuesday and today were good productive days too. I love the days when you can cross a whole bunch of little things off your list. I've finally made all the phone calls and appointments that have been looming over me for the last week month. Feels nice to have that done.

I guess February was just a slowish month, although it sure went by fast enough. I'm so ready for Spring! I'm just longing for warmth, and sunshine and open windows, no hats, mits, boots and coats to put on.  And I'm looking forward to chubby legs and arms showing again(no, not mine... I will probably wear my jeans all summer long).

So, like my title implies. I really have nothing much to say. But, but.. since this is journal of sorts, I guess I should record the fast-paced times and the slow times.

I'm off to bed to watch a movie with my hubby! Maybe I'll be inspired for a most lively post tomorrow.  One can only hope.

Happy Birthday little one!

We celebrated Katie's birthday on the Sunday before her birthday. We had Ben's family over for birthday coffee in the morning and my family over for supper and cake in the afternoon. My Opa was preaching in Chatham so both he and my Oma could come too. Katie was spoiled rotten both by gifts and attention.

A whole cake? Really?

Wow! That's a big cake!

See it's all gone?

  • It fits!
