For some reason...

I keep forgetting that I'm supposed to be blogging. I think spring is distracting me. Spring with all its moody days. It is so fickle, so unpredictable. The rain may be coming down in torrents one moment and the next, the sun is shining and chasing the clouds away.

This spring seems like it's late, and yet as Henry David Thoreau says:

"Nature is slow but sure; she works no faster than need be."

It's such a comfort to know that we can always expect spring to come after a long winter. No matter what, spring will come. We can be so impatient and want it NOW. But everything is perfect in God's timing: jobs, babies, health and the seasons.

It's so lovely, so absolutely lovely to sit outside and soak up the sunshine. I can just feel my skin drinking in the Vitamin D.

Katie loves to be outside. Every time the backdoor is open she makes a beeline for it. She would probably crawl around on the grass for a long time if I let her. She usually gets rather upset when we go inside or when she isn't allowed to crawl around and get filthy. It's on my to-do list to make her a pair of coveralls to keep her clothes clean! One thing at a time I guess.

These are all my ramblings for today. Hopefully there will be some pictures in my next post.

Five years ago

I was sick, just getting over a nasty cold/sinus infection. I had a mouth full of canker sores and I was tired.  We were sitting on my parents'  front porch, snuggling under blankets on the swing. It looks like rain.  Suddenly he decides we need to walk. I resist. Must we really walk, now? Yes, he is insistent. I dare not argue. I have a sneaky suspicion what is going to happen.  We decide to go to the park to walk, to see what Spring is working.  As we drive it starts to drizzle and since the weather is cool, we must first stop at his house so he can change from his shorts into pants. I wait in the car, nervous and excited for what I'm sure is going to happen. I finger the ring on my left ring finger. The ring I have worn since my mother gave it to me when I was 11. The ring she wore when she was 11. I pull it off and place it on the opposite hand. Am I too bold? Do I really know what is coming? He returns and we drive to the park.  The rain suddenly stops and we walk and then sit on a bench under a weeping willow not yet in full leaf. We sit and talk. I wonder when it will happen. Then, he kneels. I can't contain my smile. I want to scream YES! before he is even done. He asks, "Heather Evelyn teBokkel, will you marry me?" Of course I can't help but grin, a smile that is threatening to split my face in half. Yes, yes, a thousand yeses!  Then I laugh. The ring that he has pulled from his pocket, the ring we picked out not that long ago, it has a little piece of lint, a fluff, caught in the centre diamond. He grins his silly grin as he pulls it off and slides it on my finger. The moment couldn't have been more perfect.

14 months

This little girl is finally getting her large motor skills down pat! When I took her to the doctor at the end of March, he said her fine motor and recognition skills were way ahead, but her large motor skills were a little behind. But she's catching up! She's still army crawling around, but she's been up on her knees a few times to move forward. Hopefully this means less dirty clothes, but unfortunately it also means more worn out knees!

Katie can also finally get from crawling to sitting. She was always stuck on her stomach and didn't have the strength to pull her knees under her to get to a sitting position. She pulling herself up in her crib, playpen too, but the only problem there is that she doesn't know how to let go and sit down!

She still loves her books and will sit and 'read' for good chunks of time each day. She also just found the bookshelf in the den this week and quite enjoys pulling all the books off the bottom shelf.  She loves to point to things and have them named. She thinks as long as she says  please, she can get whatever she wants. It doesn't quite work that way around here. Katie loves to touch anything with buttons and anything that looks like a phone goes in her neck.

Katie is quite a goof and loves to play games, especially chasing games!  She gets quite rambunctious just before bed and when she's really tired she giggles at anything!

She gets upset at the least sign that I'm upset and she doesn't like it when Ben kisses me. Infringing on her territory?

We love her to bits as do her Grandmas and Grandpas, aunts & uncles etc!  She's a constant delight and is always making us smile!

Chicken Pox

We have the chicken pox over here. And by "we" I mean Katie. We had a lovely visit with the Harkes last week Sunday and surprise, surprise.. Katie has chicken pox!

I first noticed some very small spots, almost like a rash, on Katie's back and neck on Tuesday and my mom thought that they just might be the beginnings of chicken pox. Wednesday, she had more of them and then finally on Thursday I found three actually spots: one on her head, one on her back and one on her leg(she's spreading them out!). So far, she's been pretty good about it. Yesterday I found a bunch more spots and today a lot more. She has quite a few in her hair too... no combing for a while!

She doesn't have a fever and is pretty content with the usual routine. Obviously a little more sucky and whiny, but really nothing to complain about.

I read online that chicken pox is contagious 1-5 days before it breaks out. Since Katie started on Tuesday and officially on Thursday, there is a chance that whoever she came into contact with at church may have been infected. The likelihood is fairly slim I think, but just to give you moms a heads-up!

Some of her spots have already started to crust over, so she should be over the worst of it next week sometime. For now... I'll leave you with a picture or two of my speckly girl.

BC Trip part 6

Victoria, BC

So beautiful, so gorgeous, so little time.

We spent less than half a day in Victoria simply because we ran out of time. I was actually supposed to meet up with a friend from college, but I forgot her number at home, and we were late in getting to the city so we barely had time to walk along the ocean. It was just beautiful to stand looking out at this vast exspanse of water. The weather was a little chilly, but wonderfully sunny! After walking around for a few hours we drove home through the rich section of Victoria....some of the houses... wow! There was actually a section called Uplands where you drove through a brick arch and you ended up in the upitiup of the up section! After that we made our way to the ferry to home!

A bit of brag...

It's 7:45

We just got back from cleaning the church for the week.

Since lunch, Katie has eaten two cookies.

It's almost an hour past her bedtime.

She is currently happy and crawling around and has whined very little, especially considering the lack of contents in her stomach.

Now as punishment for starting to write this post, she's getting cranky.

I'm hoping she'll last until the pizza in the oven is done.

Maybe leftover potatoes would be a good idea.

I will now stop bragging.

The end.

Maple Syrup

Think fresh, hot pancakes. Now think of those pancakes with a bit of butter. Now add to that butter, some fresh homemade maple syrup. Is your mouth watering yet? Hmmm..

Ben tapped a Maple tree at the cemetery this year and made his own maple syrup! He had a few Maple taps kicking around for a while and decided to give it a try. He collected over 20 gallons of sap and spent probably about four days boiling it down. The ratio is about 50-1 so it takes a lot of sap to get Maple syrup.  Here are a few pictures of the process. I had nothing, and I mean nothing to do with any of it. It was totally Ben's project and what a yummy project!!!

The long process of boiling.

Still needs to be boiled a bit more.

Straining it to get it crystal clear.

A coffee filter does the trick!

Sharing the wealth

Can you say delicious!??!

Spring Cleaning Update

Ok, Ok.... my ambition didn't hold out.  So far in March I only did three rooms: living room, den and Katie's room and half the upstairs bathroom(it's all organized, just not cleaned)

Not that I want to give excuses, but things have been rather hectic with all the sewing, and colds, and I've increased my hours at work to two afternoons a week. Before I know my week is full! Yes, I could stay up really late cleaning, or get up really early... but I like love my sleep! A little too much I think.

My other excuse is that some pieces of furniture are too heavy for me to move by myself: piano, bed... you know, big things like that. I think that's a fairly decent excuse, don't you?

I have to confess, I'm scared to clean my kitchen. Having a kitchen with no cupboard doors=a nasty dust/grease combo. I have amazing stuff to get it off without too much work, but just the largeness of the task is rather daunting. Anyone want to help me in exchange for me helping you clean your kitchen?  (I'll probably get the better end of the deal as my kitchen is probably much dirtier than yours... but... I'll make cinnamon buns! How is that for a reward?)

April still has four weeks left! And I have five and a half rooms to go! I need to have a reward I think... something worth working for and something I won't otherwise do/get. Any ideas?

How is your Spring cleaning going?
