HomeMade

I just thought I'd repost this post about brown sugar as I've talked to several ladies in the last little while about brown sugar and how easy it is to whip mix up.

And while I'm on the subject of homemade stuff and saving moula.... I now make my own Taco seasoning with this oh-so-simple recipe. I'm not even kidding. We use this stuff all the time and it costs WAY too much, nevermind the fact that you have to buy it in miniscule little packages. So I did some research, and by research I mean I googled it. I found this recipe gave it a try and never looked back. The only thing I needed to buy was Cumin and that was in the spices aisle of Superstore.

Taco Seasoning

6 tsp Chili Powder
5 tsp Paprika
4 1/2 tsp Cumin
3 tsp Onion Powder
2 1/2 tsp Garlic Powder
1/8-1/4 tsp Cayenne Pepper

Mix all and store in air-tight container for up to six months(Mine never lasts that long!). Makes about 21 tsp. Approximately 7 tsp of the above mix is equal to 1.25 ounce package of Taco seasoning. * I just dump some in until it tastes right.

Balloon Fun

I found a balloon mysteriously tied to our back fence yesterday. I have to confess I was a little nervous....I know we live in St. Thomas, but there are strange people who do strange things. Maybe it was full of poisonous gas or  a bomb or who knows what. I know, my over active imagination was slightly out of control. But when it starts going, it's hard to shut it off! Anyways, the balloon was fine, turns out our neighbour found it in his garden and thought Katie might like it. Well she did and she had a lot of fun playing with it last night. I took way too many pictures and couldn't just pick a few, so you get a collage! You are SO lucky!

Cork boards

Also known as hot pads from Ikea covered in fabric.

They're happily hanging in my sewing room above my cutting table for me to look at and enjoy while I'm working or "playing" up there.

Hot and Cold

No joke; this kid can be hot and cold.

Did I also mention she can be a total ham?

This and that and then some

Just writing down some random memories over the last little while:

Laughing(quietly and discreetly) at Katie when she's standing in the corner for being naughty
Slobbery kisses from Emma
It's been a hard day when a dirty diaper makes me cry
Reading the clock in terms of how many more hours until my hubby comes home
Katie's fascination with stones and fear of anything that moves
Pregnancy chats with my sister
Diapers hanging on the line in the sunshine.
Katie answering a series of questions all in a row before we get the chance to ask them because she knows the routine.
Not being able to fall asleep all the way until Ben is home and in bed
Realising I haven't dusted in three weeks
A squirmy baby who gives the best smiles
Clean sheets on a bed
Katie arguing with her puppy
Feeling like a failure because my two-year-old isn't responding well to potty training
The feeling of a clean house
Morning routine of changing, dressing and feeding everyone breakfast taking an hour and a half.
Katie calling the vacuum "Daddy's Vacuum"
A husband who faithfully mows the lawn each week. (I haven't cut the grass probably since I was 17.)

Tulip Tree

A tulip tree has now made our front yard its permanant residence. This should give us a little more privacy when we sit on our front porch.... once it's done of course!

Exciting News!

I made this a little while ago for my sister and her husband, ok, it's not actually for them. It's for the tiny little new addition to their family that is scheduled to arrived(DV) in December! Hurray!  Christina and Nick are going to be Ma and Pa, Mom and Dad, Mother and Father, Mama and Papa, Mommy and Daddy, Moeder en Vader, Madre & Padre, Mère and Père....you get the idea :-) We are very excited Katie & Emma will have a wee little cousin in just sixish months!

Nick may or may not have an obsession with love for dinosours.

Big girl

Katie is learning how to drink out of a cup, with no sipperseal. It's a big deal. Oh and she's got the moustache down pat.

 LOVE this picture!

Red

A little late this year, but better late then never :-) Ben buys me red roses each year for our anniversary: one for each year. Such a romantic eh? Sigh.... he's so dreamy......

Five Months

Not too much time has passed since my Four Month post, but Emma seems to be doing much better! We started putting her down at 8ish at night and not waking her up for a dreamfeed. I figure if she's going to wake up at 5am anyways, I might as well be able to go to bed earlier. It seems to be doing the trick as she has been sleeping until 6/7 each morning. It's just lovely!  In my four month post I had mentioned she had started waking up again. I think part of the problem was that I stopped taking my Fenugreek and I wasn't quite letting her nurse long enough to get the hind milk. Things are much better now!

We're going to try some rice cereal in the next day or two. I tried some last week just because, but she wasn't ready for it.  So a few quick notes about my baby girl:

  • She loves to watch people!
  • Wearing cloth diapers, size two disposable when we go out
  • Nurses five or six times a day. (Finally no more 8-9 times!! I enjoy nursing, but not that much!)
    • Is a SUPER nosey nurser. Any suggestions?
  • Grabs at toys and can hang on to them pretty well
  • Loves faces, especially ones with beards
  • Naps from 9/9:30-10:30/11 and 1/1:30-4/4:30
  • Is always chopping on her hands
  • Sucks her right thumb
  • Is very smiley and chortles with delight
  • Is not happy laying in her bed when she wakes up. When she's done sleeping, she's done!
  • Loves being sung to
  • Does not like tummy time
  • Likes to stand
  • Is approximately 13?lbs
  • Is still wearing three month clothes: she's such a little peanut
  • Is bored easily and is on a regular rotation of bumbo chair, swing, playmat etc
  • Always wants to know what's going on
  • Will turn when her name is called
  • Is very close to rolling over
  • Still has her little birthmark between her eyes
  • Is loved greatly!

Monday Take 2

I thought I'd better record the fact that I had a good Monday to counter last week's horrible, terrible, no-good, very bad  not-so-great day.

Emma had a wonderful nap this morning!
Katie played in her playpen for an hour plus allowing me to:
  • Bake koek
  • Make bread and get it rising
  • Put diapers in the wash
Katie then played outside fairly nicely allowing me to:
  • Hang diapers on the line
  • Plant marigolds around my veggie garden
  • Nurse Emma
  • Pound my bread
  • Do some emailing
  • Do some photo uploading
  • Wash the dishes
She ate her lunch in a reasonable fashion and went to bed without a hitch after her shower because she was so filthy from playing outside.

I did some more emailing, tidying. I folded diapers and listened to a broadcast while doing some handwork(yes with felt :-) I need to go and make a potato salad for supper to eat with our sirloin steak and caesar salad!

Emma also went to bed nicely, but now is fussing. Me thinks she may have a surprise for me in her diaper since it's been..... about a week. I know, you're so glad I shared. You're welcome :-)

P.S. We're taking a break from potty training for a while. We'll give it another go later this summer, maybe, possibly, if I feel like it :-)

Happy Monday Everyone!

Five years ago

We were only engaged
The teBokkel family was growing by one bringing it to nine (It's now at 13)
Ben's parents only had four grandchildren(now eight)
Our house was barely liveable
We drove Ben's little Hyundai
I was many pounds lighter
Katie and Emma were just twinkles in their Daddy's eye ;)
I thought the stretch marks I had then were bad... I really had no idea what I was in for
I had no idea that in five years we'd have two adorable little girls
So many friends and family came along way to share in our special day

So many things have happened since then and we've made so many memories together. It's been a wonderful five years. I'm afraid the honeymoon stage has over(kids will do that do you :-), but the love has only grown and the commitment deepened. Sorry if this is getting to mushy for ya'll but it's my blog, so I guess I can get as mushy as I like! I couldn't imagine a better man more giving of his time and love. He thinks I'm pretty great too, but we won't get into that. Looking forward to the next five years and all that comes along!

A Summer Quilt

Katie's flannel Queeeult is a bit too warm for the summer. And by a bit, I mean she would probably melt under it. My Oma made this light-weight quilt many moons ago and passed it on for us to use. Katie now sleeps under "Oma's quilt" on cooler summer nights. It's just right! Thanks Oma!
